Redwood City, Calif – Leanne Binyas-Semana, 30 and Aylene Semana, 28, residents of Milpitas were fishing with their husbands at Bonny Doon beach near Santa Cruz when they got caught in the high surf and drowned.
State parks officials said the husbands, who are brothers, jumped into the ocean to save their wives, but were pushed back by waves. State park lifeguards, the Santa Cruz harbor patrol and coast guard recovered the bodies of the two women an hour later.

Santa Cruz county sheriffs said the water in that area is extremely treacherous, especially as it shifts from low to high tide in the afternoon. They said the drowning “appears to be accidental.”
