The 17th annual New York Asian Film Festival goes all-in on the Philippines this year.
With 6 Filipino films screening until July 15, it’s the largest lineup since 2013. This time, films on poverty are out — as a new generation of groundbreaking Pinoy feature films make the 2018 cut.
There is an excitement in cinema right now and there is constant debate sa between mainstream and independent, and how there shouldn’t be an independent and mainstream cinema, it’s just cinema,” says Irene Villamor, director of one of the films “Sid and Aya,” an unconventional love story starring Anne Curtis.
“I like that there is a vibrant community. I’m mighty proud, of course, but more than that yung avenue that other people are gonna see it, Filipinos here and non-Filipinos, parang ano yung take nila and it’s a different side of the Philippines,” she added.
The NYAFF will close with Erik Matti’s “Buy Bust” world premiere on July 15.
