US President Barack Obama has canceled his first-ever trip to the Philippines as a result of the federal shutdown, according to the US Embassy in Manila.

The embassy said that Obama called Philippine President Benigno Aquino III this morning to say that he regrets he will not be able to visit Manila later this month — because of issues relating to the US federal shutdown.

Secretary of State John Kerry would travel to Manila in his place. The Philippine Embassy in Washington DC said that Aquino responded that he understands Obama’s decision. “ He regretfully has to cancel his trip to the Philippines because he has to come back to the US due to the current US Government shutdown, President Aquino says he fully understands but we are happy to know that Secretary John Kerry is coming to Manila and we look forward in Welcoming him in Manila,” Philippine Ambassador to the US Jose Cuisia Jr. said

Philippine Department of Foreign Affairs spokesperson Raul Hernandez said the Philippines-US relationship remain strong and forward looking.

New York-based community leader Loida Nicholas Lewis, joined Balitang America via Skype to give her reaction, and explain the impact of the president’s change of plans.
